Spiritual Depression Its Causes and Cure by D.Martyn Lloyd-Jones I was pointed towards the mighty preacher Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (1899-1981) and am currently reading his book 'Spiritual Depression - Its Causes and Cure' which is very well known indeed. I have read the criticism that Martyn-Lloyd Jones only really viewed all Christian mental trouble as essentially a spiritual problem and nothing else, which is quite a prevalent view nowadays. I wanted to read this book as I personally have so much respect for Lloyd-Jones and will give some of my comments on the book below. |

Christian Mental Illness Demons and Deliverance Dr Martyn Lloyd-Jones I was pointed towards the mighty preacher Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (1899-1981)
By way of a little background on Dr Martyn Lloyd-Jones:-
Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones has been described as 'the last of the great preachers' and was possibly the greatest British preacher of the twentieth century. His ministry at Westminster Chapel and his writings earned him respect and affection throughout the world. He had a decisive influence on many individuals and on evangelicalism as a whole. |

A Testimony of God’s Faithfulness to a Bipolar Christian Part 4 OK final post on the book I am currently reading by Nancy L Hagerman called ‘A testimony of God’s faithfulness to a bipolar Christian - In The Pit’
Quick Quote from the book:-
This book is written for those who are so deep into self-condemnation that they no longer see the truth. It is for those who have struggled to measure up and failed so often they no longer have strength to lift their face Heavenward. It's written for those, who, as I did, believe themselves to be so worthless that they no longer have any desire to live.

A Testimony of God’s Faithfulness to a Bipolar Christian Part 3 Another great excerpt from the book I am currently reading by Nancy L Hagerman called ‘A testimony of God’s faithfulness to a bipolar Christian - In The Pit’
1) Remember, God loves you! This is absolutely essential to getting well. It is your lifeline. Hang on to this simple truth.
Do whatever it takes to keep this fact foremost in your mind. Satan will try to convince you that God does not care, that you are alone in the universe, and that you've failed Him so often that you are beneath His notice. THESE ARE ALL LIES

A Testimony of God’s Faithfulness to a Bipolar Christian Part 2 Another excerpt from the book I am currently reading by Nancy L Hagerman called ‘A testimony of God’s faithfulness to a bipolar Christian - In The Pit’.
At that point in time, the high place I held at the right hand of Jesus was something I was not aware of. My eyes were so much on myself - and my performance - that I never took a stand. Satan shook me like a rag doll.
The Prince of Darkness doesn't often put glaring temptation in a Christian's way. Obvious tactics rarely work. He lies. He accuses us in our minds.

A Testimony of God's Faithfulness to a Bipolar Christian Part 1 I have started reading a book by Nancy L Hagerman called 'A testimony of God's faithfulness to a bipolar Christian - In The Pit'.
Enjoying it so far actually, I will try to let you know more of what I think as I read more and provide a few excerpts. I liked the following:-
'If only I had realised at the time that it was not a sign of weakness or lack of spirituality for Christians to seek help for mental illness! Many of us accept it as perfectly normal to see a doctor when our bodies are sick, but believe it's unspiritual to get help when our minds are sick. And so we suffer unspeakable pain, while we continue to smile and say, "I'm fine!" when anyone asks.

Darkness Is My Only Companion Part 2 I'm back to reading 'Darkness Is My Only Companion - A Christian Response to Mental Illness' by Kathryn Greene-McCreight. As I said before this is quite a deep and thoughtful book, with much biblical referencing. This is a small excerpt that I thought was helpful:-
'Mental illness is not an indication of the weakness of ones faith. It may be, however, a test that should be met like all other tests: with prayer that God will see us through it faithfully, and that we should be found at last without reproach, that God will use it to our benefit and to His glory.

Darkness Is My Only Companion I am currently reading 'Darkness Is My Only Companion" A Christian response to mental illness by Kathryn Greene-McCreight and I must say I am thoroughly enjoying it. I know that may sound surprising given the gloomy title, but it really hasn't struck me as a gloomy book.
The author is herself a highly educated, strong Christian with Bipolar disorder (manic depression) and instead of just indulging in her own experiences she really does bring much scripture to bear on the whole issue of Christians with mental illness issues. |
